New York was founded in 1624 as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic, and was named ‘New Amsterdam’ in 1626. The city came under English control in 1664 and was renamed ‘New York’ after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York.

New York City's population is exceptionally diverse. The term "melting pot" was first coined to describe densely populated immigrant neighborhoods on the Lower East Side. By 1900, Germans constituted the largest immigrant group, followed by the Irish, Jewish, and Italian communities.

Approximately 36% of the city's population is foreign-born. The ten largest sources of foreign-born individuals currently in the New York metropolitan area are the Dominican Republic, China, Jamaica, Mexico, India, Ecuador, Italy, Haiti, Colombia, and Guyana.
