Ottawa, the fourth-largest city in Canada and the nation’s capital, is located in the province of Ontario on the Ottawa River, bordering Quebec. Ottawa was originally called “Bytown”, but in 1855 adopted its name from the Algonquin word ‘adawe’ meaning "to trade". It has since evolved into the political centre of Canada.
Originally home to the Algonquin First Nations people, Irish and French Christian settlers came to the area during the fur and lumber trade eras, quickly establishing Ottawa as a trade centre in early Canadian history.
The primary languages spoken in Ottawa are English and French, with about 50% native English speakers and 19% native French, though 40% of the population is fully bilingual. In 2001, the City Council of Ottawa enforced a bilingualism policy requiring that all services, activities and communications must be provided to residents in both English and French.
Immigrants make up a quarter of the population, with Arabic, Chinese and Spanish commonly spoken in Ottawa. The city hosts many inter-cultural and language-related festivals throughout the year: For example, the Turkish Festival, the Greek Festival, the International Writer’s Festival, CATS (The Canadian Association for Translation Studies) Annual Conference and New Tools for Translators MT Summit XII.
Ottawa's leading industries are the government and technology sectors. In fact, the Canadian federal government is the city's largest employer with over 110,000 employees. Another major employer is the health sector, which employs over 18,000 people. Business, finance, administration, and sales and service occupations rank high among types of occupations.
Ottawa is also an important technology centre; its 1800 companies employ approximately 80,000 people. The concentration of companies in this industry earned the city the nickname "Silicon Valley North”. Most of these companies specialize in telecommunications, software development, and environmental technology.
