The city of Vancouver, a thriving multicultural metropolis, has been ranked many times as one of the world’s most livable cities.

British Columbia’s Provincial Flag, which was adopted in 1974, shows five colors that are symbolic of British Columbia; blue for the ocean; white for dogwood; green for the forest; red for the maple leaf; and gold for the sun.

Vancouver contains more than 34 ethnic groups with at least 100,000 members each. It is a great place to meet people from all over the world and take part in cultural events. Vancouver hosts many language events and festivals throughout the year.  For example: the European Festival, the Francophone Summer Festival, Chinese New Year celebrations, Japanese Mikoshi Festival, Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and more!

 

Languages in Vancouver

More than 70 languages are used in the small city of Vancouver. Although most commercial services are provided in English, other languages are also widely spoken such as Chinese, Punjabi, German, Italian, French, Tagalog (Filipino) and Spanish. In fact, over 50% of children in Vancouver are raised with a native language other than English.

With this level of diversity, it is no wonder that language services in Vancouver are in high demand.  Whether it’s a small business or a large company, the Vancouver business market regularly requires language services for promotion and marketing ventures, as well as for daily operations and overseas business relations.

Industry in Vancouver

The Mining industry leads the local business economy, with 60% of Vancouver’s office space home to mining companies. Other industries at the forefront are Pipelines, Financial, Pharmaceutical, Health, Food & Drug Production, and particularly International Commerce & Trade. As Canada’s largest port, the Port of Vancouver trades over $43 billion in goods on an annual basis.

Vancouver’s scenic location in British Columbia makes it a major tourist destination, with more than 180 city parks, natural forest sites and numerous beaches and waterfront near the city centre. Notably, Vancouver hosted the 1986 World Exposition and 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Technology sector is one of the fastest-growing in Vancouver. Many software development and foreign technology companies have established an operational presence. Vancouver is also home to a large contingency of video game developers, the largest of which, Electronic Arts, employs over two thousand people.
As the third-largest producer of movies in North America after Los Angeles and New York, film and television production in Vancouver is an ever-burgeoning industry, producing approximately 10% of Hollywood’s movies. This has earned Vancouver the nickname: ‘Hollywood North’.
